Differential olive grove management regulates the levels of primary metabolites in xylem sap

نویسندگان

چکیده

The conventional management adopted in many Mediterranean olive orchards makes them more vulnerable to climate change and attacks by pathogens, due the decreased chemical plant defenses. In this scenario, a metabolomic analysis was carried out on xylem sap (Xsap) of plants (Olea europaea L.) grown Salento peninsula (Italy). Trials were two groves, one organically conventionally managed (controls), successively both converted sustainable (i.e. frequent light pruning, soil foliar fertilization, cover crops). Xsap extracted from shoots using Scholander pressure chamber pressurized with N2 gas chromatography-mass spectrometry metabolite profiling performed Xsap. An untargeted chromatography mass (GC-MS) based primary metabolites (including underivatized volatiles) revealed relative abundances 153 identified 336 unknown features across 12 samples four groups samples. Among them, than half involved metabolism. Many compounds increased levels under (such as amino acids, soluble sugars, sugar alcohols) have well-known role osmoprotectants or are defense, growth development during stress recovery stages. Sustainable groves can increase ability overcome environmental stressors enhance ecosystem balance.

Variability with xylem depth in sap flow in trunks and branches of mature olive trees.

Knowledge of sap flow variability in tree trunks is important for up-scaling transpiration from the measuring point to the whole-tree and stand levels. Natural variability in sap flow, both radial and circumferential, was studied in the trunks and branches of mature olive trees (Olea europea L., cv Coratina) by the heat field deformation method using multi-point sensors. Sapwood depth ranged fr...

Spatial sap flow and xylem anatomical characteristics in olive trees under different irrigation regimes.

The compensation heat pulse (CHP) method is widely used to estimate sap flow and transpiration in conducting organs of woody plants. Previous studies have reported a natural azimuthal variability in sap flow, which could have practical implications in locating the CHP probes and integrating their output. Sap flow of several olive trees (Olea europaea L. cv. 'Arbequina') previously grown under d...

Freezing of xylem sap without cavitation.

Freezing of stem sections and entire twigs of hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) has been demonstrated to occur without increasing the resistance to the movement of water through the frozen part after rewarming. This was interpreted to mean that freezing did not produce cavitation in the xylem sap even though A) the sap was unquestionably frozen; B) it contained dissolved gases; and C) it was under ten...
